Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap, or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matthew 6:26 (NIV).

Birds are graceful and beautiful each in their own way. As an avid bird watcher, I enjoy their flight patterns, and their beautiful songs. In our backyard, bird feeders brimming with food await the “birds of a feather that flock together.” They come daily to eat at our birdie café.

However, I have been disappointed at the infighting that goes on between my feathered friends. Especially between the smaller birds, they are so cute, which makes their vicious fighting disconcerting. They are often combative toward one another, acting as if the food supply will run out before their turn at the feeder.

But today as I watched in delighted wonder, I witnessed one chickadee going back and forth from the feeder to another chickadee perched on the trellis. This little bird would first take some food for him or herself, and then gather more food to feed their companion. What a refreshing moment. I love unity amongst people, and all God’s creatures. There are many explanations for disharmony, but the one that stands out to me is our unwillingness at times to wait on God. To trust Him for what we need. This unwillingness left unchecked leads to ungracious living and strife.

Philippians 3:20, describes God’s family this way: “But we are a colony of heaven on earth as we cling tightly to our life-giver, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (The Passion Translation).

Have you noticed how much peace and generosity you have about everything when you are clinging tightly to Him? There is nothing anyone can do to make you lose your peace, you are His representative. I can be in tense traffic, unyielding attitudes in the marketplace, and more, and still walk in love, forgiveness and generosity.  It’s “heaven on earth.” Then there are times when I lose my peace over a neighbor blowing a few leaves into my yard. . ..

I recently listened to a Bible teacher who said the Lord wakes her up on a regular basis at two in the morning. He just wants her to sit with Him in silence. Then after a while, He starts pouring into her His love and instruction. What love. [I felt a longing rise up in me for the same experience]. He is our “first love.” When we give Him first place, He equips us to walk in love, grace, wisdom, and understanding. Filled to overflowing, we are then prone to give and not take.

So, before you head into your day, I hope you will think about how loved you are. And maybe even think of my little bird friend who set an example of giving and caring for the other; just like one who “clings tightly to [his/her] life-giver.”

Let’s Pray

Lord, I love You and I thank You for loving me. Help me to remember that [1] Holy Spirit is here to lead and to guide me into all truth. As I submit myself to You, You teach me to walk in love. Please help me to remember that You are my source. I ask You to remind me how much I need your grace, so that I may extend your love and grace to those around me. [2]  I desire to be a sweet fragrance before you, and a [3] giving representative of heaven. Amen.
